Instruction
Listen to the pieces listed below. Choose TWO of the seven pieces.
The Adventures of Tintin by John Williams
Elysium by Hans Zimmer (from Gladiator)
Helm’s Deep by Howard Shore (from The Lord of the Rings)
James Bond Theme by John Barry Orchestra (from No)
Love Theme/Speak Softly Love by Nino Rota (from The Godfather)
The Magnificent Seven by James Horner and Simon Frangler
Main Theme from The Pink Panther by Henry Mancini
Analyze each of the two pieces you chose.
Then, write about 1000 words of continuous prose comparing and contrasting your selected pieces in terms of form and at least one of the following musical elements:
Rhythm and meter
Texture
Timbre, sound production, and orchestration
Harmony and pitch collection
You do not need to have a formal introductory paragraph – simply begin by stating which two pieces you have selected. If possible, close your assignment with a conclusion that summarizes the overall effect created by the musical features of each piece. You may find it helpful to consider the narratives and characters that these pieces accompany.
Please be specific and objective as you describe these pieces; use vocabulary that we have covered in class to describe these works. If you would like to use visual depictions to highlight or illustrate a point (like meter/rhythm, texture, etc), you may attach images either inline or on a separate page. Any relevant notes from your listening analyses are also welcome as attachments to your submission.
