i have two essays here. One for chapter 1 and the other for chapter 2. This post is for TWO separate essays to be completed. The book is called: Give me liberty An american history by Eric Foner.

CHAPTER 1: Instructions Once you are done reading the chapter write a double-spaced, one-page minimum, essay that explores the difference in notions of Freedom between Europeans and Native Americans on the dawn of contact. Quote the author's (Foner) words at least twice from Chapter 1 as you write this. Make sure you use MLA formatting in quoting Foner. I have put links in the syllabus on MLA formatting. Submit your written response in the "Assignments" tab. Make sure you use the following keywords in your essay: Tenochtitlan, Aztecs, Columbus, Spanish Empire, Black Legend, Pueblo Revolt. As you think about writing your essay, think about how these different notions of freedom guided their actions. Obviously there was more than one way to understand freedom and in this misunderstanding of what it means to be a free human being is where we start to understand the birth of our nation. One man's freedom can be another's misery. Your essay should give details about this cultural misunderstanding. CHAPTER 1: In this module, we are off to understanding how European settlers encountered Native Americans in the western hemisphere. As we read how this process happened let's keep in mind that no one "discovered" America, there was an encounter. Please DO NOT write that Europeans discovered America. And to a lesser extent, you should understand that the use of the terms New World and Old World is also politically biased. This may have been new to Europe but it was home to Native Americans for thousands of years. When we talk of one group discovering the other we elevate one over the other and we don't want to replicate the racialized cultural hierarchy of colonial America. After reading chapter two, write a two-page essay that describes the obstacles the English settlers faced in America as they developed colonies from the New England area to the Chesapeake. What were their challenges in terms of the natural landscape they encountered, the social landscape they encountered as well as the personal religious adaptations they had to make.
