INSTRUCTIONS:
For your academic argument assignment, read the editorial "Be a Gamer, Save the World" (database sign in required) from the Wall Street Journal and then write your own editorial responding to the scenario as well as its audience and purpose.
SCENARIO - Imagine we are back on campus!
A petition is being circulated amongst the Seneca community stating that too many students are playing too many video games in the Learning Commons. The petition asserts that this behaviour is impacting students' ability to learn and complete their assignments. As a result, the petition states that students will either not graduate from Seneca or will not find employment after graduation, both of which will impact Seneca's reputation.
The petition requests that the college ban video games from being played in the Learning Commons and block any attempt to play online video games on Seneca's internet; hence no video games are to be played on campus. It argues that students need to learn and apply the skills taught in their subjects so it claims that this request is the only means to help maintain or improve Seneca's reputation.
Having read the article "Be a Gamer, Save the World," you have an opinion on the issue and wish to gain support from the academic community for your side regarding this controversial petition. You have learned that Seneca's academic community reads College Quarterly, a Seneca academic publication. You have been in touch with the editor who is willing to publish your argument about the petition's request.
NOTE: In your editorial, you must choose a side: for or against. Avoid making "recommendations" or "solutions" to the issue, rather argue your point: should the college ban video games from being played on campus or allow students to play video games on campus. Choose a side.
