1. Research the various types of Cyber Ranges currently available to academic institutions. 2. Create a spreadsheet of the Ranges to include appropriate contact information 3. Contact Range Suppliers to find out any academic institutions that currently employ their brand of Ranges 4. Obtain contact information at those academic institutions 5. Research, using website and contact information, any policies, procedures, rules, regulations, training, etc., that applies to the Range at that particular facility 6. Communicate with appropriate CSU and University System of Georgia personnel (Info Sec, Cyber, HR, Legal, etc.) to determine any specific requirements for institution of a Cyber Range at CSU and the USG system 7. Create policies, procedures, rules, regulations, training, agreements to operate the CSU Cyber Range in a safe and effective manner.

  • Background Cyber Ranges come in a variety of forms, implementation styles, fashions and cost models. Some academic institutions advertise the availability of a Cyber Range because they use NetLab+, an online virtual network training tool. However, NetLab+ is not a Cyber Range. Actual Cyber Ranges come in a variety of styles from video games hosted on a server in the Cloud to actual server and u use a cost per use or cost per seat / student method to monetize their particular range. Cyber Ranges are relatively new in design and are just entering the educational and industry training landscape. Because they are new and their definition so broad, there is an effort underway to more readily define them, their significance and potential impact.

  • The use of a Cyber Range within any facility is, in effect, a potential source of malware or a potential source for the introduction of hacking tool and technics to the production or corporate network. Most Cyber Range models incorporate a virtual or “sand box” environment to shield it from the academic / corporate network (or vice versa). However, it is still prudent to take precautions to ensure the Cyber safety of the institution in which a Cyber Range exists. Primarily, these precautions are to set boundaries and ensure clear understanding of expectations so that there are no misunderstandings regarding the Range’s operation. In essence, it is essential that there are policies and procedures that exist and are following in order to put at ease those who are not familiar with the operation of the Range.
