  • Information Sources Your primary source for your information will be the corporation’s annual report. You will also have to do some research on the internet. The link to the corporation’s most recent annual report is in the Financial Analysis Project folder in Blackboard. Please use the annual report listed in the assignment folder to ensure the numbers in your project tie with the numbers I am using to grade your project. If the numbers in your project do not tie to the numbers in the annual report, you will receive partial credit for those numbers I can verify.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:40 PM
  • Excel The project is completed in an Excel Worksheet. Download the Financial Analysis Project Worksheet from Blackboard. Each step has its own worksheet in the file. An example project is available in the Financial Analysis Project folder. The project uses information from Casey’s General Stores. When your project is complete, submit your file in Blackboard. For those of you who do not have Excel on your computer, you should be able to access the software through the Office 365 link on your myDMACC page. If you are new to Excel, see the Tips and Tricks file to show you how to use Excel to make calculating your comparative common size financial statements and your ratios easier!
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:40 PM
  • Step 1: Get to Know Your Company 1. Go to your company’s most recent annual report. Be sure to use the link to the annual report listed in the Financial Analysis Project Worksheet. 2. Look through the annual report to find: • Annual Letter to Stockholders (Usually at the front of the report) • Financial Statements and Supplementary Data (Usually towards the middle or end) • Report of the Independent Registered Public Accounting Firm (Usually located right before the Financial Statements) • Notes to the Financial Statements (Usually found immediately following the financial statements) 3. Look for more information about your company on the internet. • Nasdaq: https://nasdaq.com • Yahoo Finance: https://finance.yahoo.com 4. Answer the questions in the Step 1 worksheet.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:41 PM
  • Step 2: Create a Comparative Common Size Income Statement Comparative common size income statements are used to analyze the trends in a company’s revenues, expenses and net income. Looking at the income statement in the annual report, it is easy to see how revenue has changed over time. Seeing how expenses and net income has changed is not. You can tell if expenses and net income increased or decreased, but you can’t tell how they have changed relative to revenue. To address this issue, analysts convert the income statement dollars to percent of revenues. For this step: In columns A, B, C & D, create the income statement found in the company’s annual report in your Step 2 Worksheet. Include all of the lines found on the income statement. Be sure all of the lines included total your net income/loss.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:41 PM
  • To the right of your income statement, in columns H, I J and K, create a comparative common-size income statement. Use the sales or revenue number as the base number. Compute the expenses and net income as percent of the base number. Round the percentages to one decimal place. (See the example in the Casey’s Project). For instructions on using Excel to add, subtract and calculate the percentages for you, see the Excel Instructions Worksheet.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:41 PM
  • Step 3: Analyze the Income Statement Analyze the comparative common size income statement you created in Step 2 by answering the questions listed in the Step 3 Worksheet.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:42 PM
  • Step 4: Create a Comparative Common Size Balance Sheet Comparative common size balance sheets are used to analyze the trends in a company’s assets, liabilities and equity. Total assets, liabilities and equity change from year to year so it is hard to compare the dollar numbers in the balance sheet and understand the changes in the individual line items in relation to each other. To address this issue, analysts convert the balance sheet dollars to percent of total assets. For this step: In columns A, B, and C create the balance sheet found in the company’s annual report in your Step 4 Worksheet. Include all of the lines found on the balance sheet. Be sure all of the items listed under assets equal Total Assets and that your Total Assets equal your Total Liabilities plus Equity.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:42 PM
  • To the right of your balance sheet, in columns H, I, and J, create a comparative common-size balance sheet. Use the Total Assets number as the base number. Compute all of the listed assets as a percent of the base number. Compute all of the listed liabilities and equity numbers as a percent of the base number. Round the percentages to one decimal place. (See the example in the Casey’s Project).
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:42 PM
  • Step 5: Analyze the Balance Sheet Analyze the comparative common size balance sheet you created in Step 4 by answering the questions listed in the Step 5 Worksheet. Remember current assets are those assets that will be converted to cash or used by the business within the next operating cycle or 12 months, whichever is longer. Current liabilities are those obligations that are due within the next operating cycle or 12 months, whichever is longer.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:42 PM
  • Step 6: Analyze the Statement of Cash Flow The Statement of Cash Flows is the statement creditors look at to determine if a company can pay their debt obligations. When the cash a company generates from operations is greater than net income, that means the company is able to pay their debts with cash generated by operating activities. That is the sign of a healthy company. Using cash generated from investing or financing activities to cover operating costs is not sustainable. Analyze the Statement of Cash Flow found in the annual report by answering the questions listed in the Step 6 Worksheet.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:42 PM
  • Step 7: Notes to the Financial Statements The notes to the financial statement provides valuable information about the way the company gathers and records the financial information presented in the financial statements. This is the place investors go to learn how the company calculates the value of the inventory/co0st of goods and depreciation as well as other items listed in the financial statements. List the first six topics listed in the company’s notes to the financial statements. The notes to the financial statements are found directly following the financial statements in the annual report.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:43 PM
  • Step 8: Financial Ratio Data Worksheet The purpose of this worksheet is to collect the financial information you need to calculate the financial ratios in Step 9. The numbers should come from the income statement in Step 2 and balance sheet in step 4. You will need to find the Take special care on the Income before Interest Expense and Income Taxes number. This number may not be listed on the income statement. You may need to calculate this by adding the Earnings before Income Taxes number and the interest expense. Also, the Annual dividends number is the total dividends paid during the year.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:43 PM
  • You may find a company may not list a specific item on their financials. One example is Accounts Receivable. If a company does not list the information in their income statement or balance sheet, type NA in this worksheet.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:43 PM
  • Step 9: Financial Ratio Calculation and Analysis 1. Using the information gathered in Step 8, calculate the ratios listed on Worksheet 9. Calculate these numbers yourself. Do not pull the information from Yahoo or Nasdaq. Please show your formula as well as your answer to earn partial credit. 2. For each ratio, write one or two sentences about what the ratio is telling you about the company. Chapter 17 of your text gives you a definition for each of the ratios. You can find more detailed information about each of the ratios in Chapters 1 – 14 in your text. Those chapters were covered in Prin I. If you still have your Prin I text you can find the information there. If you don’t have your Prin I text, you can access chapters 1 – 14 in your Connect ebook.
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:43 PM
  • Step 10: Final Thoughts 1. List three new things you learned about your company while completing this project. 2. Tell me if you would invest in your company. Why or why not?
    User_32379 | Nov 04, 2020, 23:43 PM
