Instruction
The review can be of any book or film dealing with the class theme subject to the approval of the instructor. The review will be 7-10 pages typed, double-spaced. In the review, at least three sources should cited (at least one of which should be from Supplemental or non-assigned readings), and students can explore an environmental theme as it pertains to an ecological worldview in a film (feature film or documentary) or book of their choice. In the review, make sure that you identify the thesis or main point of the book or the film. One way to do this is to identify what, in your opinion, is the most important paragraph, line, or section of the item you’re reviewing. Moreover, you want to situate this thesis within the context of the course material. In other words, this review should read differently now than it would before you started the course. By showing parallels to and differences from other ideas and readings we have encountered thus far in the course, your analysis of your chosen book or film will be richer and more nuanced. [When citing sources, please use the Modern Language Association stylesheet ( MLA]).Once you have identified the thesis, you want to critically engage it. This can be in the form of questions that probe the author’s approach and principal points, or simply a straightforward exploration of the thesis. Make sure you allow enough time and space to do this fruitfully. Lastly, have fun with the assignment. As long as the points above are addressed, you can fashion this review in many ways, such as in the style of a book review or film review you might see in popular newspaper or magazine.
