Instruction
Introduction: Capture the interest and attention of the reader.Message and background: Begin your analysis with an overview/background of the episode. What is the persuasive message the program is attempting to influence their audience of? Include when the episode occurred, how it relates to society at the time, who is the audience, what are the issues associated with this episode, and other relevant information to describe the episode.Appeals: This is the most important feature of your paper and should receive the majority of your attention. Describe how the episode follows Fisher’s principles of Coherence, Fidelity, and Social influence. Describe the language and symbols (Beeson Chapter 4 and 5) that are used to tell the persuasive story of this episode. Try to use some of the concepts from Chapters 4 and 5 to help describe how the language or symbols help to tell the narrative. How are heroes and villains used to help tell the story? Use examples and or research (verbal and nonverbal) to demonstrate the concepts. Be sure to explain why/how the examples represent these concepts. Effectiveness: Does this episode tell a persuasive story through Fisher’s paradigm? How can an episode of South Park be coherent and meet fidelity? Explain how you arrived at these conclusions. Were you persuaded by the story told in the episode? Please explain why or why not.Ethicality: Was the use of humor done ethically to tell the story and/or persuade? Was the story told done so ethically? Explain how you reached this determination. (Please note that ethicality and effectiveness do not necessarily go hand-in-hand. A persuasive message can be effective in accomplishing its purpose, but not be ethical in doing so.) Please identify and employ specific standards for use in determining ethicality in a situation such as this. Draw on the most appropriate standards for ethicality that are discussed in Larson, Chap. 2.Lessons Learned: Before concluding your paper, discuss what you have learned about Fisher’s Narrative paradigm, using language, symbols to persuade. How will this information affect you as either a sender and/or receiver of persuasive stories?Conclude
