Using the first readings, describe the ways that your understanding of gender and sex been socially constructed (communicated) Offer examples of significant messages or images that led you to the conclusions about gender/sex/sexuality you now have and what they have led you to believe about gender or sex roles/rights/behavior expectations. Using chapter 2 thoroughly, explain what theories you relate to thus far in either your gendered identity development and how those theories apply in your life. Using queer and/or multicultural approaches, discuss could you be looking at gender/sex/sexuality. Using West and Zimmerman and Judith Butler (ch. 2 and 4) examine the ways you ‘do’ gender and how that performance is connected to other aspects of your identity. Using chapter 4, explain how your body is politicized. On a micro/macro level, discuss how the ‘personal is political’ for you. Using all of our work thus far, discuss how your understanding of gender/sex/sexuality is or was hegemonic or heteronormative (meaning limited or from a dominant viewpoint). How might you still struggle with challenging norms or roles? How can a critical lens and a focus on language help you/us to examine gender?
