Instruction
Please write a paper, of about 3-4 pages in length (double-spaced, 12 pt. font size, Times New Roman), in which you respond to the following essay prompt:
In his An Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, David Hume raises the infamous “problem of induction”, which challenges our ability to rationally justify inductive inferences. Throughout the course, we have looked at various potential solutions to the problem, including i) the pragmatic solution, ii) the inductive justification, iii) Popper’s falsificationism, and iv) the Bayesian solution.
In your paper, you should (a) briefly explain Hume’s argument for his skeptical conclusion about induction and (b) discuss to what extent any of the responses that we have considered succeed. Is one response more promising than the others? How might the inductive skeptic object to this response? How might you, in turn, respond to the inductive skeptic?
