Instruction
Write a 5-page paper - that has a 12-point font using Times New Roman, is double-spaced, has a 1” margin at all sides - and includes your name, class information, Book Discussion Date, Section of the Book Discussed, etc. on the top left section of the first page of your paper. Consider answering the questions below.
CONCLUDE your paper by choosing an organization that is focused on anti-racism work, and research that organization to find out what social movement strategies that are using to address the topic of systemic racism. Include that in the final section of your paper.
Some questions to write about in your paper…
What is the nature of the grievance related to the book / discussion?
What kind of change do you/others want to bring about? ex. …a change in policy, law, practice, cultural values?
What paths are being utilized to bring about change?
What resources are needed to access these paths effectively?
What strategies are being employed to raise awareness of the issue among the public?
What purposive, material, or solidarity incentives are offered to those who join in?
What tactics are employed to press for these changes?
What are their potential risks and benefits?
How are authorities likely to respond to the tactics chosen?
How does the media or internet/social media serve as a resource?
You should also develop and answer at least three of your own chosen questions – the more the better.
Remember to incorporate concepts from the textbook and materials from our class, and your own research, including aspects of social movement theory, throughout your capstone paper.
I encourage you to write the paper after your book discussion participation so it will still be fresh in your mind.
While you are participating in the zoom discussion, observe, and participate, noting what the panelists and other participants are trying to communicate.
If there is an invitation to get more involved in the work of the group, include that in your paper. Follow your own interest and curiosity as you research this topic, book, and a social movement organization that is addressing systemic racial inequalities. Include what you find out in your paper.
Some observations to consider during the book discussion… (you can find the book discussion here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jBG8OpM_ZnY)
What are you hearing from others?
How did people interact?
What types of perspectives did other people have?
What were the topics of discussion?
What conclusions or calls to action were created?
What else did you observe?
You should use in-text APA citations in the body of your capstone paper. A reference page should be included, and it should list at least three separate sociological, peer-reviewed, journal articles that you found in the library and included in your paper. The references page is not included in the page requirement for this project. (Five pages)
