An astute observer and reporter of the political trends and overarching ideas of his times, Orwell coined the name “Cold War” to describe the relationship between the Western democracies and the USSR under Stalin that emerged after World War II. Many of the ideas that took form in 1984 had been developing for decades. The connections between his experiences and earlier works and his final masterpiece provide fertile ground for making an informed commentary on 1984 that might elude a reader unacquainted with the broad spectrum of Orwell’s work. For your final project, I invite you to analyze a theme or trope realized in 1984 that has roots in Orwell’s earlier work. Eight pages on the writing, theories, and overall impacts in relation to late Soviet Union government. The thesis of the rewriting of history by those in power in Animal Farm and 1984

t can be argued that all of Orwell’s life experiences and writing laid the foundation for 1984, from his early reading to his service in the Indian Imperial Police in what is now Myanmar (Burma) to his life among the poor in London, Paris, and the north of England; from his service in Spain in 1936-1937 to his strong anti-totalitarian stance in his writings throughout the 1940s; and including his work as a propagandist for the British government during World War II, his witnessing of the destruction wrought by the war in England and Europe, and such personal experiences as his first wife’s death and the long period of illness culminating from a lifetime of poor health.
