Assignment: Compare two films viewed in class in order to explore how common stylistic and thematic issues are dealt with differently depending on the historical and cultural context in which the films are made. Draw on your journal entries and class discussions. You must use at least two sources from the assigned class readings to provide historical context and evidence to support your argument. Topic: Both Sunrise and His Girl Friday focus on a day in the life of a woman. How are the women’s desires presented differently in terms of the two films’ visual styles? How does the representation of marriage change (or not) in a film focusing on a woman in a public workplace rather than in domestic space? Use the specific historical contexts of these films’ productions to examine their differences and/or similarities. Not to worry, I will provide the assigned readings and journals.
