According to Merriam-Webster, a whistle blower is one who reveals something covert or who informs against another. An appropriate moral motive for whistle blower is preventing harm to others. Revealing information becomes ethical when it will save someone from being hurt or mistreated or when it will keep someones rights from being violated (Guy 1990).
Based upon in-depth interviews with thirty recent graduates of the Harvard MBA program, less than a third believed that their organizations respected or encouraged whistle blowing (Badaracco and Webb 1995). A similar number were not sure how their organizations would treat whistle blowers. The remainder believed that whistle blowing was dangerous. Whistle blowers also experience moral conflict (Dozier and Miceli 1985). Blowing the whistle on your company is seen as a violation of loyalty. In professional setting, there is a conflict between collegial loyalty and responsibility to the public. However, whistle blowing is an uncommon phenomenon and during the decision-making process for one to decide that the cost is not worth the benefits of sticking his or her neck out. What is your opinion regarding whistle blowing and in particular Edward Snowden case.
