Instruction
1. Audience: First Year Writing (FYW) Students (ENGL 1301) who may or may not have taken ENGL courses at this university. Make sure you use appropriate vocabulary but do not be afraid to talk the way you would talk to a student of your age.
2. Purpose: To inform and orient student about what he/she must do or NOT do, in order to be successful in this English class. In addition to this, you must encourage incoming students into ENGL 1301 by telling them some of the importance and relevance of this course. Try to persuade student to embrace the challenges of the course and to give it their best regardless of the difficulty but remember that goal of this piece of writing is NOT to scare the students entering ENGL 1301. Think of how you felt, what you went through and how you managed to succeed in this class.
3. Genre: Letter (like all letters don’t forget to include date, salutation, body paragraphs closing, and signature block). The letter should be no less than a page and no more than two pages. In this letter you may include the use of the first person “I” and you may share your personal experiences… remember the nature of this genre. You may sign your letter with your name or you may put anonymous as you prefer.
4. Tone: In this letter you do NOT have to be formal or strictly academic, as a matter of fact, I suggest you use a funny or informal tone to engage your reader, as long as you keep a respectful language towards the reader.
5. Formatting: Typically, letters are single spaced. Try to keep it to a minimum of one page and maximum of two. The font does not have to be Times New Roman however it does have to be 12 in size.
