PART 1: Module 7: Discussion 1 -- Independent Living and Community Participation
Chapter 13 of your text discusses the essential transition element of creating an outcome-oriented process and how person-centered planning approaches can be used in building caring communities. After determination of a student's needs, interests, preferences, independent living skills, and strengths, the exploration of residential and community options can be initiated prior to graduation.
The following discussion question is designed to help you evaluate the availability of a range of school and community resources for students with disabilities on topics relevant to the enhancement of independent living and community participation.

1.Research agencies and community programs in your city/town that provide community participation and leisure opportunities for students and adults with disabilities.
2. Share the name and location of the agency or community program and describe the activities and supports offered that enhance independent living and community participation.
