Slogan (1 page)
Develop a short and easy way for any member of the public to remember your issue and its importance.
Something that is memorable, original, and direct. To help you develop your slogan, consider those of
corporations or publicly recognized entities, politicians or political parties. Remember to be sensitive to
the public’s view and create a slogan that is not overly political or polarizing. The fewer the words the
better in your slogan (ideally it would be no more than five, but most are around 3-4 words). In one
page, share how you developed your slogan and what thought went behind its creation. This can be
described through the first person.
Policy Brief (2 pages)
The traditional policy brief or “one-pager” can be interpreted in a number of ways and for different
policy audiences. You will target your policy brief to the local, state, or federal government, by
identifying the legislative body that has jurisdiction over your issue. For this part of the assignment, it
should be literally one page, front, and back. Core content should include: an overview of the
importance of the issue (why should they be interested), the population affected, what has been done
to address this issue, the impact if no action is taken, if relevant, the financial impact, and what your
recommendation is to address the issue. Remember, this must be clearly organized, quickly digestible,
and include data to support your case.

Campaign Strategy (4-5 pages)
For this 4-5 page section of the assignment, you will develop a campaign strategy. Outline in detail who
is your target audience. What media outlets, which local, state, or national organizations, which policy
stakeholders should hear your slogan, read your policy brief, and be informed of your issue. Be
6 thoughtful in this process by identifying potentially key legislators given their committee assignment, or influential players in the political process. How can you get the profession, the public to move forward? Social media? Direct Advocacy? Editorials? Within this work, be sure to frame it in the context of a major health reform tenant outlined in the NAM Vital Directions. Essentially, why is your policy part of the larger discussion and how should it get there? Consider outlining this section with headers on Outreach, Policy Makers, and Communication.
