This disorder can be painful for children and overwhelming for parents. Selective mutism begins in early childhood between ages 2 and 4. Countless of times SM has been mistaken for autism stubbornness or oppositional behavior. Children with selective mutism speak in environments where they feel secure and comfortable.''
