Chapter 12:In the age of reform women made significant gains for their proper place in society. Although they were not allowed to reach full equality, they did make decent inroads to creating a society where a man and a woman are on equal footing. Write a 1-2 page essay on how women during this time changed, for the better, a women's place in society. Quote Foner at least twice.

Chapter 13:For this chapter, lets focus on the US Mexican War. So much can be written about this war and the ramifications of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As we have been learning, western expansion and especially the expansion of the cotton trade was lucrative and Mexican land had proven to be suitable ground. The Texas experiment had proven to the Americans that land could be taken by might from Mexico so when President Polk saw the opportunity, he took it!
Write 1-2 pages on what started the war (Include Manifest Destiny) and what major events happened during the war and the results of the war (include the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo).

chapter 14:Although the Emancipation Proclamation did not free all slaves, it did free slaves in the South to create confusion for the Confederate army during the war. We oftentimes refer to this document as the point in American history where slaves were completely emancipated. After reading this chapter and reading the entire speech (attached) write a one-page1-2 page essay on the historical significance of this document by discussing its context.
Context in this case is the circumstances under which it was necessary for Abraham Lincoln to write this. Obviously you should consider that the US Civil War was taking place but less obvious is how Lincoln was navigating the very thorny idea of race relations in America at the time. So, the answer is not only in the document but at this point in the course, the answer should come to you after learning about the Civil War in this chapter and understanding that the Civil War is the culmination of many years of social strife that divided America. I am also including a site on the Civil War that supplements the chapter and the document.
Make sure you quote Foner at least ONCE and the document at least ONCE
