Look for examples that stand out to you that showcase intergenerational trauma. Then, draft an essay that explores this theme of intergenerational trauma through the city and how it might be operating in the nation. HINT: The Civil War, the Civil Rights Movement, indigenous genocide, human trafficking, slavery, suffrage and immigration are each sites of unresolved trauma in America, and that's just to scratch the surface. However, if you have another home country you wish to focus on, or another community experience (such as the Holocaust), feel free to explore that. It is up to you how large to make the personal component--it may be relegated to the conclusion if you don't have much to say. On the other hand, you could give your personal example equal emphasis as the book so that your essay becomes a compare/contrast between the textual city and your own context.
