Introduction – Introduce the reader to the paper
Marginalized Population: The Mentally Ill in Prison or The Oldest Old
How is this population marginalized? Are they oppressed? If so, how and why? Does discrimination play a role? What about access to resources?
How do socioeconomic status, race, gender, and/or other social variables play a role? Explain and be specific.
Social, Environmental, and Economic Justice, & Human Rights
What issues of social, environmental, and economic justice did you see or think of after watching this video?
Did you notice any issue related to human rights? If so, describe why it is a human rights issue.
Practice Implications
Why might it be hard to garner support for this particular population?
What are your personal biases toward this population? Reflect on your own preconceived notions and/or experiences with people who are mentally ill.
If one of the individuals or families in the documentary you watched was your client, what would you do to help them? Describe at least three things you would do as their social worker, and explain why.
What are the key components in the assessment of their situation?
How might the role of advocacy be fulfilled?
