Instruction
When designing your elevator speech consider that your audience does not know anything about you or your intended leadership in advanced practice nursing. You must clearly articulate your ideas succinctly and use language that is direct. The framework for an effective elevator speech includes the following:
1. What is your intended personal best APN leadership project?
2. Why is your leadership project important to the future of nursing in each of the four domains: clinical practice; nursing profession, healthcare systems, healthcare policy?
3. Who will benefit from your leadership project?
4. When and where will you carry out your leadership project (i.e., local, state, national, and/or international levels)?
5. How will you know if your personal best APN leadership project has succeeded? The classic descriptive elements of: what, why, who, when, where, and how apply to the elevator speech. The goal is to have your audience ask for more information. You want to entice them to ask follow-up questions when you present your elevator speech.
