Background Information
Biotechnology is generally a subject of debate and controversy, including such topics as eugenics, genetically modified organisms, and cloning. Biotechnology includes using knowledge of biological processes and technological advancements to alter biological systems.
In your post, be sure to give background information about the topic.
Also, discuss if and how the biotechnology has been used in real world applications, or potential applications for the technology in the real world.
Then, explain the implications (positive and negative) of the biotech.
Be sure to suggest possible solutions for problems that you mention and support use of the technology you are in favor of.
Your post should include at least 2 in-text citations with proper APA formatting. Be sure to use a resource like the Purdue Owl (Links to an external site.) to help you.
Discussion Prompts
Rules for your post:
Consider the Implications of the science – For each prompt, consider both the positive and negative implications of the method, using scientific findings to support your statements.
With all that we know and can achieve, what are the ethical and moral implications of using this knowledge? Be able to give examples that support your findings and position.
Science, in essence, is about discovery without concern for fairness or politics. Where should we draw the line or how should (or could) we institute safeguards for ensuring the ethical and moral use of science? Or, is this even an important concept to consider in scientific advancement? Be able to give examples that support your findings and position.
Consider also addressing these as related to your prompt (this should not be the main focus of your post, but may be included as an opportunity to consider ethics/politics/morality/opinion)
Be respectful of your peers’ positions and understanding – This is not meant to be a political rant session, but a platform to discuss scientific understanding. To help others be clear as to where your insight is coming from, be sure to be specific:
Say what you know – Back up your statements by explaining what you have learned from your research. Be sure to provide your sources during discussion. (2 resources are required)
Say what you think – Explain that you are giving your opinion when you are. Do not confuse your opinion with research.
Say your experience – If you have experience with the topic, feel free to share that to support your position
TOPIC CHOSEN: Consider food manipulation for human consumption. Discuss the science related to use of growth hormones and antibiotics in the production of animals for meat. What are the implications of these treatments in food sources?
