Your task is to write a review of the journal article Kantola, A. 2020. Gloomy at the Top: How the Wealthiest 0.1% Feel about the Rest.
Sociology, 54(5): PAGE 904-919 .Your review should include each of the topics listed below that that we have engaged with over the duration of this module. This assignment will test your ability to interpret, and critically evaluate literature based on empirical social research.
The review should be 1000 words . You must use Times New Roman, Font size 12, 1.15 spacing.
Close reading of the journal article is essential, and your assignment should reflect your ability to pick up on the methodological approach adopted. Some of the aspects of the methodological approach will be explicit (made clear in the article and stated plainly) while others will be implicit (not stated directly). In your review, you should include statements on the following:
• Reference the article that you are using for your review at the top of the page
• Provide a short summary in one or two sentences summarising the focus of the article.
What is the main argument that the researcher is making?
• Provide a statement of the aims, objectives and central research questions
addressed by the article
• Discuss the role of the literature review (with regard to the focus of the study)
o Did the researcher draw on a body of previous research?
o What theoretical/conceptual framework used and discuss how
theory/concepts were used by the researcher.
• Discuss the paradigm that the research method draws from (this may be explicit or
implicit)
• Identify and discuss the research design that is used and discuss its suitability to
answer the research question. Is the research design implicit or explicit?
• Discuss the method of data collection that was used (qualitative/quantitative/mixed
methods), how the data was collected. Discuss the quality of approach taken: the strengths and weakness of the approach: is the approach well documented? Is there a clear description of the methodology? Is this adequate?

o If qualitative, also discuss the types of questions that were asked to respondents and the concepts that the researcher tapped into during the interviews/focus groups
o If quantitative, also discuss the type of concepts and variables used, the analyses undertaken, the independent and dependent variables used, and discuss the issue of causality
• Describe the approach to sampling taken by the researcher, and the sample size. Discuss the strengths and weakness of the sampling approach taken
• Discuss the way that the researcher analysed the data. Was there a good synergy between the theoretical framework adopted and the approach to the analyses? Discuss the principles that underpin how the data was analysed and interpreted. Have the correct procedures pertaining to the methodological approach have been followed by the author? Justify your evaluation
o If qualitative, also provide a summary of the findings and discuss the approach to qualitative data analysis and interpretation used.
o If quantitative, also indicate the type of concepts and variables used, the analyses undertaken, the independent and dependent variables used, and discuss the issue of causality
• Provide a short summary in one or two sentences on the conclusion that was reached by the researcher.
• Provide an overall assessment of the reliability and validity of the research. Have generalisations been made that are not based on evidence provided? Has bias been introduced into any of the information presented? Was the research conducted in an ethical manner?
• The review should address each of the issues listed above.
• The review should be no shorter than 1 page long and no more than 2 pages long. You
must use Times New Roman, Font size 12, 1.15 spacing.
