Assignment 1: FINDING A RESEARCH QUESTION AND DEVELOPING A HYPOTHESIS OBJECTIVES 1.Identify psychological phenomena n the real world 2.Identify psychological theories that relate to real world phenomena 3.Develop testable hypotheses. REVIEW The 1st step in developing a research question is to find something that is interesting or puzzling to u. A research question asks “why”. Why do people vote for candidates that propose policies that will hurt them? Next, u need to categorize the behavior into the relevant psychological area of study. For example: development, social, abnormal, cognitive, or personality. This list is not exhaustive. If a researcher’s area of specialization were social psychology, he or she would look at how the situation people are in at the time would produce differing behavioral patterns. For example, no one thinks of him or herself as being violent person, but if your family was being threatened with violence and u had a gun, u would probably use it.

ASSIGNMENT: You will be working alone on this assignment.Please consider and answer the following questions. 1. List three different behaviors or psychological phenomenon that interest you. 2. FOR EACH OF THE BEHAVIORS, put them into a psychological area (social, life-span, cognitive, abnormal, etc.). Your questions may or may not involve different areas of psychology. 3. FOR EACH OF THE BEHAVIORS, then find a theory that addresses the behavior. The behaviors should require different theories to address them. 4. FOR EACH OF THE BEHAVIORS, develop a falsifiable statement (hypothesis). The statement must address the “why” question and be falsifiable. In other words, I will be expecting a hypothesis that requires an experimental or quasi-experimental design.
