Proposal For a Technical Writing Class
Proposals describe a possible endeavor, explain why it should be undertaken, and discuss the methods that will be used to accomplish the work. Where reports are informative, proposals are primarily persuasive, moving the intended audience to say yes to the proposed project. As the first step in your analytical report project, you will write a proposal that describes the problem you have identified and lays out a plan for addressing it.
For this assignment, I as your instructor am your audience: your job is to persuade me that the problem you have identified is an appropriate, worthy, and feasible topic for this report assignment. Ill want to see that you have narrowed a concrete, context-specific problem, that you can identify appropriate methods for investigating it, and that you can approach it in an objective way with the interests of a specific target audience in mind. While you may narrow or shift your approach after this point, please do enough preliminary research prior to writing the proposal to ensure that you will not need to switch topics due to lack of data.
In a well-organized and visually appealing document, your proposal should:
Introduce the problem you will investigate, providing sufficient evidence to establish that there is a problem. What are its causes and effects? Identify the decision-makers that seek to address this problem. What is at stake if the problem is not investigated?
Outline a research plan. Summarize at least two (2) data sets that you have already reviewed. Describe your plans for further research. What information you will need and how you will gather it? Include all sources on a properly cited reference page.
Describe your qualifications for investigating this subject.
Discuss the deliverable you hope to offer. Specifically, what types of solutions/recommendations might you offer? Remember that ability to discuss the issue objectively is critical in the proposal stage.
