My Propaganda Paper will be focusing on the way the men are presented in the artwork. The art I have chosen to focus on the propaganda based on the appearance of males as powerful aspects in history. For my museum choice I found a painting from The Getty Villa website, my choice is ​Portrait of a Halberdie​r (1529–1530) by Pontormo. I found this painting very powerful and interesting because it has so many small details that are so strong and meaningful.This painting was painted during the siege of Florence which was the time when military forces would cut off essential supplies in order to get an enemy or rival to surrender. The male in the image has a facial expression that shows confidence and power. He is dressed properly and he has a spear and battle axe tied onto him which shows that he can be a soldier or part of the army. In the painting the male has his arm on his hip which symbolizes his stance, he seems very self-asserted and reliant. As a young male he looks mature and honored. For my online choice #1 I have chosen to work with the image of Napoleon known as Napoleon Crossing the Alp​ (1801-1805) by ​Jacques Louis David​. ​Just by looking at the painting we notice how powerful it is because Napoleon is on a horse and the way the horse is on its two legs and Napoleon is sitting on top with a straight pose showing he is strong. Napoleon is crossing the alps with his arm pointing up telling us that he is giving directions, now we know he is in power. He is also dressed properly and presented as if he is ready for war. There is a spear tied onto Napoleon also just like the male from the ​Portrait of a Halberdie​r (1529–1530) by Pontormo which tells us that they both are part of the army or even soldiers. I believe both these portraits are about war as a pro war propaganda because both men look very presentable and tidy. They try to portray war as the job of a strong, powerful and strong male. Even though these two paintings are over two-hundred seventy five years apart they are both oil paintings and I think it might be because the details and colors are very important in these paintings and the oil paint reserves the presentation.
