Book Essay Assignment: Kindred In Kindred, Octavia Butler blends science fiction and historical information to reveal the first-person narrative of Edana(Dana) Franklin, an African American writer who is caught between the society of Los Angeles in 1976 and the slave society of Maryland in the 1800s. Assignment: Enslaved Africans in the 1800s endured the daily threats of slave patrols, beatings, rapes, whippings, having their children or loved ones sold, constant monitoring, and persistent insults. To survive these indignities, enslaved Africans in Kindred used a range of tactics, particularly:(1) they attempted to run away(2) they asserted as much power they could in the house positions that they held(3) they accepted the life that they had and made the best of the situation(4) they attempted suicide.
