You will write a formal visual analysis of these works, see below for details. Make sure that you are allowed to photograph them both (without a flash, of course). This is worth 20% of your final grade Develop a strong thesis statement : This is a thesis-driven paper. Your focus will be on t he formal aspects of the work but the work must be grounded and introduced to me. Consider: What is the history, or happenings of the time this art was created? How does the material(s) of which this object is made reflect the culture in which the object was made? How the subject portrayed in this work reflect the culture in which the object was made? What is this artists place in art history, or what is their other work like? Why you selected this artifact/work of art; what is appealing or interesting about it to you? Please note you will need to do extra research to complete this… Provide a detailed formal analysis: Conduct a formal visual analysis using the Elements and Principles that are listed below, refer to the lectures and notes you have been provided over the first half of the semester to help develop this. This analysis is a clear visual description, and should be the starting point of your paper, imagine I don’t have the opportunity to the see the works you are writing about, your formal visual analysis should tell me exactly what the work looks like. Elements: Like ingredients Line Shape and form Color Texture Space Surface and Depth Light and Shadow Principles: how elements are used Focal point Balance, Symmetry, and Emphasis Movement Proportion and Scale Pattern, Repetition and Rhythm, Variety and Unity Then compare & contrast each work considering these points: Time period Culture Geography Material/media Artist Subject Use Reason for being made Keep in mind, this is a formal paper, with a formal analysis. You have been developing a new language and global understanding of how, and why artwork is created, you do not need to guess, start at the beginning, the physical: Edit, have someone else edit, edit yourself, and then do it again. This is not an English class, but you should edit all your work, everything you write. Details: guidelines Length requirement is 1000 words minimum. But, to earn an A on this you will need to write more than 1000 words. This must be double-spaced, 12-point, Times New Roman font in MS Word format only. You must use MORE than the class textbook and museum label information as reference materials for this paper. So find other resources, books, articles, use the library, or Writing Center. Complete & proper citations must be used where references are required. Use MLA format. This means a bibliography and in text citations, if you do not include both you will not get any credit for that section.
