Essay 3 Prompt Comic books have had a history of being somewhat ahead of the curve when it comes to representing powerful marginalized characters. Wonder Woman is an obvious example. The debut of X-men's STORM (A strong, tribal African hero who becomes the leader of the X-Men on the heels of the Civil Rights Movement) is another. X-Men has also put openly gay superheroes on their cover and we all know what a success Black Panther was. In fact, you can even read (really, you should) a recently published comic called NUBIA: THE REAL ONE which reimagines the Wonder Woman story with a young black teen as its hero; it asks "Can you be a hero if society doesn't see you as a person?" So while there has been progress in comics, there is still a ways to go. That's where you come in. For your essay/project, you are responsible for creating a hero whose character/power/story speaks to a marginalized group. Your character can be male, female or non-binary. They can be can be Black, Asian, disabled or representative of any other or any combination of marginalized identities. But it's not enough to simply think of a character. It's important to think of the character and their struggle in the context of things that are happening in the real world. Your paper should have multiple components. Visual Component: What are some visuals that might help us imagine your character? This visual can be a sketch or digital art, it can be a pinterest boars showing pieces of inspiration or any other visual medium that either shows your character design or inspiration for design. Powers/ Weakness/ Struggle Establish your character's special powers, or if this character does not have powers, what is it that makes them "Super"? What are they up against? What weaknesses do they have? Argument: The main thrust of the paper is to create an argument which puts your hero in the context of today and uses stories which are in the news to explain how/why your character is relevant in 2021 and how/why representing this marginalized group is so important given what is happening in the world today. Why is this hero needed?
