We are living during an era in which some of our most cherished assumptions require some reassessment. One of the assumptions is that the future will always be better than the past or present. One generation will leave a better world to the next generation. It is easy operating under that assumption to see all growth as good. A growth paradigm supports a better future for the young. Part of the growth-is-good meme is the practice on the part of governmental and quasi-governmental organizations to incentivize certain behaviors either through tax breaks or special programs. These breaks and programs are in place to create jobs and enhance the overall economy in the future. However, the growth-is-good meme may not be helping members of your generation. Student debt, a poor economy and many unresolved major economic, environmental and political issues cloud the historical growth-is-good meme.
