Midterm Assignment: This midterm assignment is the Common Core writing assignment. Students will write a 500-1000 word essay using primary sources. The midterm assignment is run through a plagiarism checker.

Instruction
1. Read the instructions for the Midterm Paper (attached). Particularly note the requirement that your topic must relate to the period 1865-1990. For example, the Lincoln meme refers to the development of the Democratic and Republican Parties after Lincoln. Lincoln himself does not fall within the time period of this course. 2. Select a topic. Discuss it with the professor during class or office hours if it is not one of the listed topics. 3. Find three primary sources and three secondary sources for the topic. Arrange them in a bibliography. On the basis of these sources, decide which argument you would like to make. 4. Write an introductory paragraph, three supporting paragraphs that use the sources you collected in Step 3, and a conclusion, followed by the bibliography from Step 3
