Higher rates of suicide among indigenous Canadians d. LGBTQ youth homelessness rates e. A topic of your choice 2. Once you have chosen a topic, pick a specific province or territory to focus on. For example, you could research “LGBTQ youth homelessness rates in Manitoba.” If possible, be even more specific and look at a city or town. For example, “LGBTQ youth homelessness rates in Winnipeg, Manitoba.” 3. Analyse the problem from the perspective of one of the theories attached below. For example, what theories might help explain this issue? 4. Think of possible solutions to the problem. What could the Canadian government do? What should individual Canadians do? Writing Your Letter 1. Pick your government official: Research the MP (Member of Parliament) for the area of Canada most impacted by the issue you researched. You can search for MP's here: https:// www.ourcommons.ca/members/en 2. Introduction: Introduce yourselves (who are you? why does this issue matter to you?). Provide an explanation for your letter and describe the issue in general. Include statistics and data that show the extent of the problem. You can also include examples of the problem. 3. Analysis: Is it related to problems of gender or racial discrimination? Is it related to one of the theories of regionalism? 4. Solutions: Suggest ways that Canada might address this issue. What can the Canadian government do? What should Canadians do? Do you have similar issues in your country or countries? How have other countries addressed similar issues? You can ask for more information or clarification on the MP's position. You can request a commitment to a specific action. 5. Summary & Conclusions: Summarize your research, analysis and solutions and add any final thoughts.
