Instruction3) Week #5 DISCUSSION ASSIGNMENT: June 27th - July 3rd: You will select a current topic in the new and provide an analysis, applying some of the reading materials, class lectures, and ideas/concepts/paradigms introduced in the class. Due before 11:59 pm, July 3rd. Within the last year (2020-2021), have you watched a film that stars an Asian American, Desi American, and/or Pacific Islander character in the U.S. context? If you have, what was your impression of the film and the character(s)? If you haven't, why do you think that is? Asian American/Pacific Islander/Desi Americans are the fastest growing group in the U.S. today, surpassing all other groups, including Latinas/os/x. There are about 23 million AAPI/APIDA people living in the U.S. By 2050, the number is said to double to over 50 million. If AAPI/APIDA people are the fastest growing group, why do you think their representation in the media, in law, in politics, in the arts, in social work, etc. have been so few and far between. (For example, if you've watched "People's Court" or "Divorce Court," or "Dr. Phil" or "Dr. Oz," why do we rarely see an AAPI/APIDA people, if any ? I realize these might seem like silly examples ) Where are AAPI/APIDA people more visible? Why do you think that is? What are some of your informed thoughts on this? (If possible, see if you can incorporate some of the readings and class materials to enhance your discussion post).
