PART ONE : Briefly respond to the following questions: 1) What is the difference between traditional criminological research and studies that approach crime from a life course perspective? 2) What are turning points and why are they important for desistance ? Write at least 250 words per question. PART TWO: Use an example from our present day culture where our ability to imagine things differently is obscured by rationalized or "one-best way" thinking. It could be an example of politics, consumer taste, identity, or practices of freedom. Pair the appropriate theorist from the 6/28 readings to your example and description. Read the book : Social Theory Reader, (STR), Charles Lemert Various excerpts (italicized readings linked to or on blackboard, bold readings are on Marxists.org) Week 5 (6/28) Frankfurt School - Horkheimer and Adorno “The Concept of the Enlightenment,” “the Culture Industry,” Benjamin’s “Art, War, and Fascism,” and Marcuse’s “Repressive Desublimation” in STR  Critical Theory and Neo-Marxism – C. Wright Mills and Habermas Mills “the Sociological Imagination,” Habermas’ “Emancipatory Knowledge,” and “Social Analysis and Communicative Competence” in STR.
