Instruction
when sociology first came about it had to PROVE that it was in fact a real science and that it deserved a seat at the table. The best way that sociology could exemplify this was by using none other than the scientific method. I would like you to select any topic (hopefully one you are curious about) and then use the six steps of the scientific method to design a study. Now this is just a very small scale practice run so I can offer you feedback, do not feel you have to spend hours on this activity. Here is an example below to show you how I would set it up: Step 1: Ask a question: Do dogs dream while they sleep? Step 2: Research Existing Sources: After reading through several peer reviewed journal articles, I have found that although there is some doubt, there are some who believe that dogs do in fact dream while they sleep. Here is a link to a supporting source: https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/lifestyle/do-dogs-dream/ Step 3: Formulate a Hypothesis: I believe that when dogs sleep at night they dream. Step 4: Design and Conduct a Study: In an laboratory I have four dogs that curl up in their dogs beds after a long day of play sessions. While the dogs are sleeping I place night caps on their heads that attach to a machine that tracks brain waves. Step 5: Draw Conclusions: The next day I examine all of the data collected by the machine and look for trends and patterns. After I have analyzed the data I can confidently say that dogs do in fact dream while they sleep based off of their brain activity. Step 6: Report Results: Now that I have proven my hypothesis as true, I can take it and publish it in the famous barks&bones journal. (This is only after I have replicated the study hundreds of times yielding the same results!)
