For #2, you're right that Study 2 is an association claim; I suggest reconsidering Study 1's claim, though. For #3, the causal criteria I'm referring to are covariance, temporal precedence, and internal validity. (So, are the IV and DV related? Does the IV come before the DV? Can we rule out third variables in the relationship? Why or why not for each of those.) For #4, your construct validity question is great, but I recommend revisiting the other three. Statistical validity is all about estimates, precision, and effect sizes. Your internal validity question will depend on your response to #2. You're close with the external validity question, but remember it's all about the who of the sample and whether we could generalize these findings to everyone.

  • For #5, I think there might be a misunderstanding about purpose of a press release. The job of a press release is to represent the major findings of research published by the organization's (in this case, U of British Columbia) researchers, so it's going to be written for non-academic audiences (and won't provide all the details of the research article). While I think the press release does a good job of explaining the research, I appreciate this point of view (this is more of an opinion question, so it's not a right/wrong item). Nice job on #6, just one small thing: the journal title has all the words capitalized (APA style is nothing if not arbitrary).

  • You've got a really good start with the annotation, but it's missing a lot of info and you're focusing on some less important stuff (like the size of the sample, the course credit, and the data that were not used). One tip I try to follow when I'm writing them is to have 1-2 sentences for each major section of the paper (background, method, results, and discussion). What kind of sadism were the researchers interested in? What did they ask the participants to do (and who were the participants)? Who were the higher-sadism participants being compared to with these findings?
