Summary In this lesson, you will begin the process of developing your course essay. Steps 1) Generate a list of three (3) books that have been published within the past decade that you think have the potential to become influential works of American literature. These books can be: • novels. • a collection of short stories. • works of non-fiction. • books of poetry. Each book must have only one author; no anthologies or collections of work by various authors. Consider why these books might continue to have a lasting influence on American literature. Perhaps these books have been important; perhaps they have been incredibly popular, or perhaps they have been largely unrecognized but have generated strong reactions among some readers. 2) Finally, provide a brief (three to five sentences) explanation for each of the three books that you feel has the potential to become an influential part of the American literary canon. Do not summarize the books; instead, explain why each one has the potential to stand as a great work of American literature. You will submit this final list in the workspace provided.
