InstructionYou are responsible for 2 (two) critical essays (short story/Othello) this semester. A critical essay is basically a critique or discussion ofsome aspect(s) of any of the stories that we have discussed in class B. Try to show how elements like setting, conflict, point of view, characterization, etc....develop a particular character. You maypick one element and discuss many aspects of that particular element. You must use evidence from the text to support your assertion. Show how an element supports a story’s theme. Evidence is needed to support your assertion; this will come directly from your story. C. MAKE SURE THAT YOU DISCUSS THE STORY IN PRESENT TENSE. REMEMBER, WHEN YOU READ THE STORY, IT IS HAPPENING NOW! NOT YESTERDAY. POINTS ARE DEDUCTED FOR NOT USING THE CORRECT TENSE. Example: Beowulf IS a wonderful warrior! D. Your essays should be 500 words in length, double spaced (MLA format). Times Roman 10/12 Font. Paragraphs should include an introduction with a clear, three point thesis statement, a minimum of 3 body paragraphs that support your points in your thesis statement, a conclusion, and a works cited page. Your essays should include at least three to five direct quotes from your story. Any of these items that are missing will have points taken off. E. MLA DOCUMENTATION: If the information in your literature book is not enough, your Writing Matters book has the pamphlet with new MLA. PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT ESSAYS SUBMITTED WITHOUT PROPER DOCUMENTATION INSIDE THE TEXT(PARENTHETICAL DOCUMENTATION) AND/OR A WORKS CITED PAGE WILL NOT BE RETURNED TO YOU FOR A RE WRITE BUT WILL RECEIVE A 0 FOR THE ASSIGNMENT! F. A summary (re-telling) the story is not an acceptable critical essay will receive a 0 for the assignment. You will need to “tell” a small bit of the story to discuss it, but do not tell the story from beginning to end. Tie your ideas together to give your essay a point. G. In the introduction, make sure that you give the author’s name, the title of the story, and also the definition of the term that you are goingto be discussing. Make your introduction interesting. See Writing Matters. Feel free to discuss/explore ideas. Regardless of the topic and approach you use, you must support your assertions with quotations and passages from the text. You are required to use only the primary source (your text). Just remember to properly document. Do not use sources and informatio from the Internet. The only source that you may use is your textbook for the story.
