Instruction
The current description of Assignment 3 is general and does not give you a specific guideline or take into consideration some cases where you cannot run one of the tests. To make sure you understand what you need to do in this assignment, I prepared a guideline below that you should follow.
(1) Which test to perform
The description says that you run a chi-square test and a correlation test, and include a crosstabulation table. Yet, these analyses depend on the level of measurement.
For a chi-square test, your two variables need to be either nominal or ordinal, or a mix of them. If your variable is an interval/ratio variable, you need to recode it into an ordinal variable. It does not need to be dichotomous. It can have more than two categories, and this is my recommendation. Keep in mind that if you recode an interval/ratio variable into an ordinal variable, you will lose a lot of information. To keep as much information as you can, I recommend you create more than two categories. This applies to a crosstabulation table as well. You cannot use an interval/ratio variable for a crosstabulation table. You need to recode it.
For a correlation test, your two variables need to be ratio or interval. If your variables are ordinal or nominal variables, you cannot run this test. You cannot recode a nominal or ordinal variable into an interval/ratio variable. If you do not have two ratio/interval variables, you do not need to run this test. Focus on chi-square tests and crosstabulation tables.
If you want, you are also welcome to perform t-tests. Please make sure you understand what level of measurement is appropriate for t-tests.
Please keep in mind that you need to perform a statistical test for each pair, not just one pair.
(2) Measures of association ( (topics to be covered in Week 6. The textbook explains it.))
For each pair of the variables, you must calculate a measure of association. The textbook does not talk about measures of association when your pair is nominal and ordinal variables. In this case, you can report Cramer’s V, treating the ordinal variable as a nominal variable. This is not a perfect choice but you can still use it.
When you examine the relationship between two variables, make sure all variables are coded so that higher values mean better states. This means that if a variable is coded reversely (i.e., the lower the better), you need to recode them. For example, suppose that you are interested in happiness (happy in Codebook A). This variable is coded with 1 being very happy and 3 being not too happy. You need to reverse-code this variable with 1 being not too happy and 3 being very happy.
(3) Organization of the writing
You should include four sections: introduction, methods, findings, and conclusion. This assignment should be 2-3 pages in double space. Please use Times New Roman with the font size of 12 and normal margins. Please do not manipulate these settings.
After the text, use Page Break (go to Insert and click Page Break in Word) and attach a reference list. For this assignment, your reference list would be short. It may have less than five references. After the reference list, use Page Break again and attach tables. You should use one page for each table. Always use Page Break when you add a table. Do not attach tables in the middle of the text. After the tables, use Page Break and attach your syntax.
For tables, please do not simply copy and paste tables from SPSS. I do not accept such tables. You need to copy them into Excel first, stylize them following the APA manual (7th edition), and paste them into Word. Please do not include any tables you do not discuss. Make sure you include table numbers and titles starting with Table 1.
For the findings section, you should report and discuss findings, referring to table numbers. For example, you may write:
Table 1 shows results from a Chi-square test. The p-value is less than 0.05. I reject the null hypothesis and conclude that there is a relationship between the two variables.
