What is capitalism? Using the assigned readings, describe the essential features of capitalism as both a mode of production and a social system composed of inherently antagonistic classes. In other words, explain how capitalism produces things, and why this system of production necessarily entails class struggle. What does race have to do with capitalism?
Responses must be 4-5 pages in length. Papers are to be typed in Times New Roman, size 12 font, double-spaced, with one-inch margins.
You must cite everything which is not an original idea. Since I am not asking for any original ideas, *most sentences should be cited.* Limit yourself to assigned material only.
Use the follow abbreviations for in-text, parenthetical citations: (CM)= Karl Marx (Communist Manifesto)
(M)= Karl Marx (Marx and Modernity)
(Pr)= Preis (Labor’s Giant Step)
(W)=Wood (The Origins of Capitalism)
(PJ)= Page & Jacobs (Class War?)
(A)= Allen (“Class Struggle and the Origin of Racial Slavery”) (DB1)= Du Bois (Black Reconstruction)
(DB2)= Du Bois (“Of Wealth and Work”)
(E&R)= Esch & Roediger (“Scientific Management...”) (Wh)= Whatley (“African-American Strikebreaking...”)
For example, this is how you would cite Allen: While not initially racialized, slavery became racialized as a result of Bacon’s Rebellion in 1676 (A, 11- 12).
Every sentence that contains information derived from one of the readings should be followed with an abbreviation for the reading and a page number, in parentheses. You should not directly quote the readings: put the information derived from the readings in your own words. You do not need to include a separate bibliography page.
