This is an essay question that should be developed primarily from your head. But I do encourage the use, and expect some, direct quotes, or data/examples from outside sources to support, not to write, your ideas. Use my corrections page and other materials to help you both edit your work, and on how to properly use quotes, and to document any sources that need footnoting.
I do not want in text citations, but footnotes, which are easy to use, and are real world skills.
Choose one of the essay topics below to develop. Make sure you have all three elements of a good paper: a solid introduction which lays out what the essay is about and accomplishes, and includes a good introductory paragraph; a body with one paragraph for each idea you need to develop to reach your conclusion; and, a well developed and detailed conclusion that is based on what is presented in the body.
Hints: The conclusion drives the focus of the paper and what is presented in the body. The introduction should be the last thing you revise so it states what you actually did, not what you intended. I base the grade not on the question you are answering, but on how well you accomplish what you state you will do in the introduction - that is how well your body supports your conclusion, and how well your conclusion is supported by the body.
There is no length requirement as a good paper is as long or as short as it needs to be to develop your key points, leading to a strong conclusion of your lessons and takeaway, and/or concluding statement. It is your lessons that drive the focus, and ultimately the length of the paper. Having a good outline helps keep the paper on track.
1. Over the long term, has state power increased or decreased in relation to that of the federal government? Use a couple or a few examples to help make your points and be sure to provide your lessons learnt and takeaway in the conclusion.
2. Which amendment to the Constitution, or element of the Constitution, do you think is the most important, or one of the most important to you, and why? or, Which amendment or element of the Constitution would you change, and how would you change it and why? Be sure to provide your lessons learnt and takeaway in the conclusion.
3. Chose your own topic relative to what has been discussed in class so far. This requires my approval, so email me if you want to create your own question, and provide a detailed, but short, proposal for my review. I don't have a length requirement for a proposal, but a couple to a few paragraphs should suffice.
