According to you, which is Marxism’s biggest flaw? Base your answer on specific facts and aspects of the documentary*. 300-500 words • Dialectical materialism (infrastructure and superstructure) is wrong. Social organization does not exclusively depend on its economic structure. Ideology matters. • The ‘precapitalist society vs capitalist society’ typology is unconvincing. Other categorizations are more relevant, e.g. traditional society vs innovative society. • The division into two classes (bourgeoisie and proletariat) is too simplistic. There are always more than two classes in society, including the bureaucratic class. • Exploitation and alienation do not solely define a worker’s life. Through work, people wish to have access to leisure and cultural activities. • Class struggle is not the primary means of change. Other factors are driving history, e.g. democracy and human rights.

  • this is from the prof ( A student wrote me to ask for further information regarding the first assignment. Basically, as I previously underscored, the assignment is an exercise in sociological imagination. Your task is not to summarize what is being said. You need to extrapolate and interpret how the various elements presented in the documentary may serve to corroborate this or that hypothesis. For example: What does popular music’s appeal say about the role of the superstructure?)
