Instruction
"The Grand Inquisitor" is is an important reading from Dostevsky's long novel, The Brothers Karamazov.
I have also added a reading on an attempt to use the Grand Inquisitor reading to explain ISIS.
Here is the proposed structure:.
Introduction
Give background in terms of the chapter being a part of the longer novel The Brotherss Karamzov by the Russian author Dostovesky. Explain the time and setting of the story, 15th century Seville Spain.Explain what an inquisition is that leads to the executioin by burning the guilty at the stake. Christ has returned and has been arrested by the Grand Inquisitor and inprisoned in a dungeon cell. State your thesis that focuses on the contrasting views between miracle, mystery, and authority.
Body paragraphs, Part I
Explain Christ's rejection of the three temptations by the Devil. Treat each one separatedly to explain it in terms of human freedom. You can present this in one or more paragraphs. Remember the focus falls on human freedom.Keep in mind that there is only one speakr in the parable--the Grand Inquisitor.
Boady paragraphs, Part II
Explain the Grand Inquisitor's views on why he thinks Christ was wrong in rejecting the three temptations by the Devil. Treat each one separatedly to explain it in terms of human freedom. You can present this in one or more paragraphs. Remember the focus falls on human freedom. Focus on why the Grand Inquisitor insists that humans really don't want freedom.
Conclusion
After presenting both sides of the argument over human freedom, present your views on the strength and weaknesses of the two attitudes.
