The people who were gaining knowledge about abnormal psychology began to understand, treat human personality, and behavior in a way which is usually disconnected from Christian perspectives on life, and sometimes in ways that seem to contradict what Christians believe. Spiritual development played a big role in how someone had a further understanding of mental illnesses by their sin, faith, knowledge, and Christian life. "In other words, their concern was most often directed toward the shaping of moral character and the enhancement or deepening of a believer's relationship with God"(Johnson, Jones). Christianity influenced and transformed the way people who were studying abnormal psychology think about other people. Just like the second commandment "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself" (22:37-29).
