Instruction
This hardship internship assignment is designed to orient the intern to many facets of the criminal justice system. This hardship internship assignment will allow the student to exhibit a clear and deliberate understanding of what distinguishes Law Enforcement, Courts, Corrections, Community-correction, and Public Policy apart within the criminal justice continuum. The intern will take on specific projects in a select number of core areas. In addition to gaining real-world experiences, students must also produce a substantial scholarly portfolio project that integrates with the body of criminal justice theory.
The Hardship Internship Assignment consists of six separate tasks or projects. Students at the A.A.S. (Associate degree) level will select and complete any two of the five assignments (see below) of Part B. Students on the B.S. (Bachelor degree) level will select and complete three of the five assignments (see below) of Part B. The overall assignment will be presented in an academic portfolio. After completion, the student is required to submit the finished portfolio to the Criminal Justice Department Chair for evaluation and scoring. All students (both associate and bachelor degree) must complete Part A and select the appropriate number of items from Part B.
Scenario Tasks:
As a new member of a criminal justice organization that works throughout the system (i.e. Law Enforcement, Courts, Corrections, and Community-based services), please select two or three projects from Part B below depending on your degree track (i.e. A.A.S./B.S.). A professional, well-written, scholarly sounding and an exhibition of academic rigor is expected.
Part A: Must be completed by AAS and BS degree students:
1. Substantive Scholarly Paper
The intern will research and report trends on a selected criminal justice topic. The student is expected to develop a well-written scholarly research paper exploring a problem and trends in a selected topical area, which includes rates, types, and victim-offender relationships and/or impact. Using relevant information, prepare a 5- to 7-page research paper. Describe the topic and problem area. What are some possible solutions to the problem? Provide the pros and cons in relation to the topical area and identified problem. Seventy-five percent (75%) of your sources should be from current (i.e. within 5 years) criminal justice journal research articles. Use APA formatting, as outlined in the APA manual for each selected project (i.e. APA 6th Edition).
Part B: Select 2 (A.A.S) or select 3 (B.S.) Must be completed:
1. PowerPoint Presentation
The intern will develop a 10- to 13-slide PowerPoint presentation that focuses on ethics in the field of criminal justice. Discuss the value and implications of ethics within the criminal justice continuum. Explain the relationship among professional values, ethics, and career success within the criminal justice field. Identify at least three sources of professional values and ethics. Provide at least two specific examples in your description. Provide a creative presentation that adheres to PowerPoint best practices. Use APA formatting, as outlined in the APA 6th Edition.
2. Criminal Justice Timeline
The intern will develop a time-line (i.e. one paper, chart, and or graph) that highlights landmark issues, policies, and/or events that have served to help shape our current criminal justice system over the past 20 years. For example, issues such as the relationship of criminal justice and social justice, police in a democratic society, concepts of a dual court system and courtroom participants, purpose of prisoners and prisoners rights in society, the role of public policy within the system, how technology impacts the system, all have helped to shape our current system of justice on a local, state, and national level. Remember to offer considerations for future possibilities of the criminal justice system based on the students findings through the development of the project
3. Criminal Justice Fact Sheet
The intern will develop a fact sheet on various criminal justice issues including life without the possibility of parole, hate crime legislation, corrections oversight, isolation and pre-trial detention. The emphasis will be ON New York and New Jersey facts concerning the criminal justice system (i.e. Rockefeller Drug Laws). The fact sheet should include at least 20 relevant facts with proper sources for validation.
In Part B, I choose #2 and #3 to do.
