Are democratic rights necessary for a strong state?

Your answer should
• Define the particular democratic rights you will be discussing
• Explain how they are, or are not, linked to the characteristics of a strong state
(which you should also define)
• Use examples from at least two countries. They may be democratic or non-
democratic regimes, strong or weak states.
Suggested resources:
• Drogus and Orvis Chapters 2 and 3
• Fund for Peace’s “Failed State Index” criteria
• Freedom in the World Surveys, Freedom House
• News articles and reports, especially of states that are currently experiencing
instability
