Instruction
Please reflect on your own experience with media and technology, with particular attention to how this has changed over the last ten years. Your reflection should be 600-800 words long.
In particular, think about how you acquire and consume media such as television shows, movies, music and films. What, for example, influences you to purchase a book or see a movie?
You might find, given the word limit on the assignment, that it is more practical to discuss your relationship to just one or two forms of media rather than a great many. Speaking personally, I could write several pages just on the technology Ive used to listen to music beginning with my first record purchases, moving to cassette tapes and the Walkman, and ending with mp3s, Napster, iTunes, Internet radio and my smartphone.
It might be interesting to contrast one form of media (television, perhaps) with another (lets say books) and think about how your consumption patterns of one have changed in relation to the other. Its possible one hasnt changed very much while the other has totally transformed.
One goal of this first assignment is to get you to unpack what you mean when you talk about music, movies, magazines, etc. (By unpack, I mean examining in more detail the cultural and technological assumptions around the concept and the thing it represents. One easy way to do this is through reflecting on your own experience with a particular form of media from the time you were a child to the present day.)
