Flash Drive Technology
(Sample IT Journal Entry)
***Technology Definition
Flash drives (also called USB drives, thumb drives, jump drives, pen drives, key drives, tokens, or simply USB drives) are portable small, lightweight, removable and rewritable storage devices; similar to floppy disk except flash drives are faster, hold more data, and are considered more reliable (due to their lack of moving parts) than floppy disks. These types of drives use the USB mass storage standard, which is supported by popular operating systems such as Windows XP, Mac OS X, and Linux.
***Business Application(s)
Flash drives can be used in place of a floppy disk, Zip disks, or even CDs. When the user plugs the device into their USB port, the computer's operating system recognizes the device as a removable drive and assigns it a drive letter. Unlike most removable drives, a jump drive does not require rebooting after it's attached, does not require batteries or an external power supply, and is not platform dependentmeaning it works with most operating systems.
Flash drives plugs into a computers USB port and functions as a portable hard drive. USB flash drives are touted as being easy-to-use as they are small enough to be carried in a pocket and can plug into any computer with a USB port. USB flash drives have less storage capacity than an external hard drive, but they are smaller and more durable because they do not contain any internal moving parts.
***Business/Society Implication
Given the ever decreasing cost of data storage more businesses are finding cheap data storage as a mixed blessing, i.e.,the ability to store more data is needed for business intelligence yet; business are putting off critical data lifecycle management decisions with increased storage capacity and data security is becoming a daunting task as storage devices capacity is increasing exponentially while becoming smaller and cheaper. All of which presents a challenge attempting to secure company data from employees using USB drives.
