Then see if there are any changes in the ways their eyes are described at different points in the story. We say that the eyes are windows to the soul. What can you say about the characters' personalities from the way Steinbeck describes their eyes. 2. "What are Masons?" Clues: We are told that Peter Randall was "an example for young Masons of California to emulate." Emma's father had been a thirty-third degree Mason and worshipful Master of the Grand Lodge of California. Go to Wikipedia and find out what Masons are and how they are organized. Why do you think this detail about Peter is important? What does it tell us about him? 3. "Ready for a little math?" Clues: The Randall farm contains 45 acres of flat land and 80 acres of upland, we are told in the story. You may want to change all of this into the metric system to get an understanding of how large the farm was. Then, as a good detective, compare the size of the farm to the size of the campus of CUA, to get a more concrete idea of its size. Why do you think Steinbeck uses these details? What do they show us about the Randall family and Peter's risky decision at the end? 4. "A bird may not be just a bird." Clues: The word "bird" is mentioned at least once in the story, on p. 115. Find that quotation and asny other quotations about that refer to birds. Does the bird, in general, symbolize anything in your culture? You may be familiar with the white dove as a symbol for peace, pretty much an international symbol. Think of other birds that stand for ideas in your culture or in the American culture (for instance, CUA has as its mascot the cardinal). What do you think the mention of the word bird means in the story? 5. "Let's talk real estate!" Clues: "The Radnall ranch was no more encumbered with mortgage than any of the others in the valley." And the text goes on with reference to "interest" and "principal." Find out what these terms mean and how they are related. If the dictionary is not very helpful, ask someone who has bought a house or a plot of land. Why do you think Steinbeck is mentioning these things in the story? What do they say about the main characters?
