Platos Allegory of the Cave Essay Assignment

Critically read and interpret Platos Allegory of the Cave. (Lawhead, pgs. 32-35; also, easily found online).

What does it reveal about Platos epistemologyhis view about what kinds of knowledge the senses give you vs. what kinds of knowledge the intellect reveals?

How does the allegory convey the idea that philosophy is an activity that results in freedom and autonomy?

Explain and evaluate the above issues. (For our purposes, "explain" means to state the theory and to describe the important features of the theory in a manner that an intelligent but uninformed reader would understand. For our purposes, "evaluate" means (1) to determine whether or not the theory rests on a sound or cogent argument, and to (2) determine the overall plausibility of the theory. In this context, "plausibility" refers to the strengths and weaknesses of the theory). Your essay should show evidence of some original analysis. You might want to review the rubric and other information about essays on the Syllabus. Your paper should be approximately 2 pages, conform to a particular manual style, and include several references to the original text as shown on pages 32-35. Remember, your essay is, in part, an effort to illustrate your understanding of the reading. Please submit them to the D2L drop box by the designated date.
